Do you smell it? That smell. A kind of smelly smell. The smelly smell that smells... smelly.

He lives in a pineapple under the sea.  You know who I mean.

Well, now he lives in the rain forest, under a tree.

Don’t be confused.  We’re still talking about the same obnoxious character . . . sort of.

Meet Spongiforma squarepantsii . . . no kidding.  A fungus named after the goofy little sponge with a snail for a pet.

I swear you can’t make this stuff up.  But a scientist actually named a newly discovered species of shroom after Spongebob Squarepants.
It was discovered in the forest on the island of Borneo in 2010.  it supposedly smells "vaguely fruity or strongly musty” . . . if you think about it, Spongebob could have the same odiforous issues . . . he lives in a pineapple so he might smell fruitish and he’s also a constantly soggy sponge . . . that would totally smell musty.  Ah, how art imitates life.

Microscopically it very much resembles a sponge . . . like Bob . .  unlike most mushrooms but just like a sponge you can wring water out of it and it will spring back to its original size.

I guess it's not so odd that scientists have a sense of humor.  After all, it was not too long ago that another new species of toad was discovered and it was named after Mr. Burns of The Simpsons fame.

Me thinks, that these folks spent too much time in front of the boob tube when they were rug rats.  Just sayin'.
